We believe that college is about more than just memorizing facts. It’s about gaining crucial perspectives and life skills. That’s where General Education comes in.
What is General Education?
Brockport’s General Education program, called Learning for Life, is a series of foundational courses that are designed to help you grow intellectually and personally.
With flexibility to choose your own path, you’ll explore a variety of subjects, from science and math to arts and humanities, while gaining essential skills like communication and critical thinking along the way.
Students will customize their own combination of 31-40 credits that align with their career goals and personal interests.
You’ll dive into hands-on learning experiences, become a better thinker and communicator, and explore new cultures and perspectives — all with one goal in mind: to equip you with the skills you need for success, both in college and beyond.
The General Education curriculum consists of 31-40 credits depending on course selection and other variables, such as previous credits earned in high school or at another institution.
Some courses may count towards more than one requirement.
Each general education course fulfills one SUNY knowledge area and may also fulfill one of the following requirements: contemporary issues, oral communication, or perspectives on gender.
Yes. Students should consult their major requirements or their advisors to see which general education courses count for the major as well.
All proposals for new courses in the General Education program or modifications of existing General Education courses must be submitted to Brockport University Senate in the form of Senate Resolutions.
