The Honors College invites applications from transfer and current Brockport students who have established a record of academic excellence in their first year or two of college.

Admission eligibility

To be eligible for admission, students should apply by the first semester of their junior year. Transfer students admitted into the Honors College normally have a cumulative transfer GPA of at least 3.5. Current Brockport students usually have a cumulative institutional GPA of at least 3.5.

Admission to the Honors College

To apply to the Honors College, transfer students must first apply for admission to SUNY Brockport by submitting either a SUNY Application or a Common App. Once admitted to Brockport, you then complete a short supplemental Honors College application by logging into your Brockport Admissions portal and clicking on the Honors College application option.

For optimal consideration, students should submit the Honors College application by March 15. However, applications submitted after March 15 will still be reviewed and considered.

Transfer & current Honors College course requirements

The Honors curriculum is designed for students in any academic major. Students who are admitted into the Honors College at the midpoint of their undergraduate education—whether as a transfer or as a current Brockport student—are required to complete three upper-division Honors course requirements:

  • Honors Contemporary Issues
  • Thesis Practicum (HON 395)
  • Honors Thesis (HON 490)

Additional Honors courses may be taken to fulfill General Education requirements.

In their first semester as an Honors student, most transfers enroll in an Honors Contemporary Issues course, which hones skills in research, critical thinking, and writing. In their final year, Honors students complete a senior thesis in their major, an independent scholarly or creative project developed under the guidance of a faculty member.

Maintaining eligibility

Upon acceptance into the Honors College, students are expected to complete at least one Honors course per academic year and maintain a cumulative college GPA of 3.25 or better. Honors students are strongly encouraged to schedule a meeting with the Director or Associate Director of the Honors College at least once per academic year to review their progress in meeting program graduation requirements.
