(Please note this does not apply to students accepted into the RN-BSN program or the Bachelor’s to BSN: Accelerated Degree Program)
Please read this letter carefully. It contains general and specific information for all students considering applying to the Traditional BSN program.
Acceptance into SUNY Brockport is not the same as acceptance into the nursing major. Acceptance into the nursing major is highly competitive and it is not guaranteed by acceptance into SUNY Brockport. Unless offered Direct Admit status by the University as an incoming freshman you will be considered a “Nursing Intent” until you have applied to and been accepted into the nursing program. Your status will then be changed to Nursing Major. This designation allows the university and nursing faculty to better guide you in areas of transfer credit evaluation, advisement, and registration.
General Information
The first two years of coursework involve completion of liberal arts requirements and nursing pre-requisites. Students need to have 66 non-nursing credits in addition to the nursing program credits to graduate with a BSN degree. The application to the nursing program is due by January 20th of the year you plan to enter the nursing program. This is typically in a student’s sophomore year.
The Traditional BSN program begins in the fall semester only. Refer to the School of Nursing website for application instructions. The application will be available on the School of Nursing homepage in early December each fall semester. Students will be notified via Brightspace that it is posted. Applications submitted after the due date and time will not be accepted. Applicants are notified of acceptance or non-acceptance via designated email in March of the year they apply.
All nursing intent students who fail to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 (based on Brockport course work) will be placed on probation after the first semester below a 2.75 and will lose nursing intent status after a second semester below a 2.75. This includes both part-time and full-time course load. Freshman and sophomore nursing intents who fail to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 after two semesters, will have their major changed to undeclared and referred to academic advisement for a new academic plan.
*Students that lose their nursing intent status may be reconsidered and have their nursing intent status reinstated IF they raise their cumulative GPA to >3.0 within the next TWO standard academic semesters (Fall/Spring semesters). During this time, it is the responsibility of the student to update their nursing advisor and continue to meet with their advisor as they work to achieve reinstating their intent status. Nursing intent students who are junior or senior level status cannot change to undeclared but must change their major. Therefore, these students will be referred to academic advisement to determine a new academic plan.
All students should refer to the School of Nursing website for additional information.
Transfer students applying to SUNY Brockport must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all previous course work to be considered for nursing intent status. Any student accepted to SUNY Brockport under another major and has a transfer GPA of less than 3.0 are not permitted to change their major to nursing intent, even if their Brockport GPA is 3.0 or higher.
Any Students admitted to SUNY Brockport under another major and is seeking to change their major to nursing intent must complete the following:
- Must have taken a minimum of 15 grade bearing credits at SUNY Brockport
- Must have at minimum Brockport GPA of 3.0.
- If a student has transfer credits, both their transfer GPA and Brockport GPA must be a 3.0 or higher.
- Once the student has met the first 3 criteria, they must schedule an appointment with a nursing faculty for an interview and evaluation of Degree Audit.
The following are criteria for eligibility for all prospective nursing students applying for admission into the nursing program:

- all students must comply with current SUNY, NYS, and clinical/program-specific vaccination requirements, and other requirements as stated in the Undergraduate SUNY Brockport Nursing Student Handbook
The School of Nursing faculty maintains documentation of meetings with students for advisement and other issues in the student’s file. These files are only accessed by nursing faculty and staff and are utilized and referred to during the application process.
Once the Admission committee has reviewed all applications and created a preliminary acceptance list, nursing faculty will review the list of potential students. If students have not met the delineated criteria in this document, then they will not be offered a seat in the program. Based on their professional judgment, if two or more faculty express concerns about applicants in terms of questionable academic performance and behaviors, (e.g. evidence of cheating), unprofessional behaviors, (e.g. poor attendance or chronic tardiness in APS or PRO 204, not showing up for scheduled advisement appointments, inappropriate behavior in or outside the classroom, and other similar issues), lack of responsibility, or behaviors inconsistent with the School of Nursing Guidelines for Suitability and Capacity to Enter the Profession of Nursing or the American Nurses Association Professional Standards, the Admissions Committee will not extend offers of admission to those applicants. These behaviors/incidents are often documented in the student’s file in the nursing department.
Evaluation of an applicant’s suitability and capacity may also be determined during the required meeting with nursing faculty. An applicant may be asked to meet with a second nursing faculty to complete the evaluation. The nursing faculty will document the outcome of the meetings in the student’s file. If there is any documented academic dishonesty in prerequisite or general education courses, students will not be admitted.
