Statement of objectives

Please review the following statement: “Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals” (ACA, 2010). Furthermore, the Department of Counselor Education at SUNY Brockport values self-reflection, taking interpersonal risks, and addressing issues of privilege, power, and difference.” In a well-developed essay of no fewer than 700, but no more than 1,200 words, describe your plans for a professional or scholarly career, and how you think our program can support your goals. We will evaluate the writing sample for content, style, and general writing ability as part of the admissions process.

Interview

Applicants invited to the group interview will be required to provide a spontaneous writing sample. The spontaneous writing sample will be used as part of the department’s admissions criteria.

Proof of NYS initial certification

School Counselors, CAS only - currently certified School Counselors must submit proof of your NYS Provisional Certification. Applicants unable to provide such proof at the time of application must hold the appropriate certification before beginning graduate study.
