Position Description
Resident Assistants are selected on the basis of leadership potential, experience, and the ability and desire to assist students, in maximizing their experiences in the Residence Halls.
At all times, RAs are expected to maintain confidentiality, communicate effectively, and act appropriately. While RAs are allowed to have additional employment and encouraged to be involved on and off campus, the Resident Assistant position is a priority, only second to academics. RAs are expected to arrive early and stay late at certain times throughout the academic year. RAs are expected to continue to participate in personal, professional and career development opportunities throughout the year in addition to required trainings and conferences. Our RAs boast high academic achievement and experience well rounded co-curricular experiences.
Supervision
All Resident Assistants directly report to their Resident Director and indirectly report to members of Leadership Team. RAs will be evaluated during the academic year by their Resident Director based on criteria listed below. Resident Assistants build mentoring relationships and assist individual students in developing as a whole person, including cognitively, culturally, personally, and socially. Resident Assistants fulfill a variety of roles as a student leader: Community Builder, Community Leader, Administrator, Role Model, Conflict/Crisis Manager, and Facilities Liaison. Within these roles, Resident Assistants maintain various responsibilities, outlined below.
Terms of Appointment & Expectations
- RAs are appointed for the academic year (for two consecutive semesters).
- RAs must be 18 years of age at time of appointment.
- RAs will be formally and informally evaluated throughout the academic year.
- RAs must have a minimum of one semester as an enrolled student at SUNY Brockport at the time of appointment.

In order to be eligible for re-appointment, each RA must have:
- A minimum of a proficient evaluation of performance from their RD.
- Be in Good Academic Standing.
- A completed application for re-appointment.
- Please note that RAs will be asked to provide appropriate coverage to the residence halls during campus events (Homecoming, major events, opening and closing weekends, concerts, etc.), power outages, campus impacted facility events, weather impacted events and other dates where additional coverage may be necessary. This includes coming back early for trainings and remaining in the residence hall to assist with check out in May after finals are completed. This is at the discretion of the Director and Assistant Directors of Residential Life/Learning Communities. The Office of Residential Life/Learning Communities will provide as much advance notice as possible if/when additional coverage is requested or necessary.
- Abide by all expectations within the ‘RA Duty Expectations 2024 – 2025’ document.
- Participate in the RA weekend duty schedule to ensure proper support.
- Review and follow the ’2024 – 2025 RA Security Responsibility & Confidentiality Agreement’.
- Be able to participate in both Fall and Spring trainings.
- Cannot student teach, participate in an internship, or perform a field experience that requires more than 15 hours weekly, while holding a student staff position.
- May not hold a position of outside employment without prior written approval from your Resident Director.
Qualifications for Undergraduate Resident Assistants
- Must be a full-time matriculated undergraduate with 12-18 credits per semester at the time of appointment.
- Must have an overall GPA of 2.5 for your Brockport Institutional credits at the time of appointment. Transfer credits WILL NOT be taken into account.
- Must have a minimum of one semester as an enrolled student at SUNY Brockport at the time of appointment.
- Must be in good disciplinary (student conduct) standing at SUNY Brockport at time of appointment.
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment.
- Recommended to have one semester of on-campus living.
Supplemental Qualifications for Undergraduate Living Learning Communities Resident Assistants
- Must meet all qualifications for the Undergraduate Resident Assistants.
- Recommended to have one semester of living in a Living Learning Community.
Remuneration* (Subject to Change)
- Full room waiver.

Partial board waiver.
- This will be determined based on the number of semesters that you have been on staff and position you are hired for.
