APS Peer Mentors—Fall 2025

What is a Peer Mentor (PM)?

PMs are representatives of SUNY Brockport who collaborate with the Academic Success Coordinator to support new students with their transition to the University. PMs play a vital role in mentoring incoming students through their partnership with the Academic Planning Seminar (APS), Welcome Week, and additional programs throughout the semester.

Peer Mentor Position Details:

Obligations

  • Completion of asynchronous Peer Mentor Prep modules before returning to campus.
  • Attendance at Peer Mentor Training held the week before the semester begins.
  • Attend a weekly Peer Mentor Team meeting.
  • Complete regular self-evaluations throughout the semester.

Responsibilities

  • Helping incoming students with their transition to SUNY Brockport
  • Reserving time (up to 3 hrs. weekly) to meet with and help mentees during your Mentor Office Hours.
  • Facilitating ASC Success Skills Workshops (Time Management, Note-taking, Textbook Reading, etc.)
  • Assisting with Second Year Experience (SYE) Events
  • Regularly communicating with students about relevant events, important deadlines, and timely advice.
  • Reconnecting students with their APS instructor.

Required Criteria

  • Cumulative GPA at or above 2.5 and in good conduct standing.
  • Full-time status, continuing Brockport student in Fall 2025.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and networking ability.
  • Ability to facilitate group discussions and activities.
  • Ability to model successful student behavior.
  • Availability for and dedication to the role throughout the semester.

Preferred Criteria (but not required)

  • Interest in pursuing a degree in Higher Education.
  • Experience working with peers in higher education.
  • Students with extra-curricular activities (athletics, clubs, and/or organizations, etc.)
