Visit the Reading Room
Visits to the archives Reading Room on the ground floor of the Drake Memorial Library are by appointment, by emailing archives@brockport.edu.
Please be specific about your area of research so staff can have relevant items ready for you when you arrive.
- In order to maintain a quiet research environment, silence your electronics and do not conduct mobile phone calls in the Reading Room.
- The following are not allowed in the Reading Room: beverages, food, chewing gum, smoking, pets, and children under the age of 12. Water should be in a tightly closed container.
- Pencils are highly encouraged for note-taking. Please be mindful of ink or pens when archival materials are present. Be sure your hands remain clean throughout your visit.
- Help us preserve our materials by observing the following precautions when handling them:
- Work with clean hands at all times.
- Work with only one box or folder at a time.
- Make no mark on materials.
- Do not place your notebook or papers on top of materials.
- Do not rest books or other objects on materials.
- Touch only the edges of materials.
- Do not refold items in new or different ways than as the came to you.
- Exercise extreme care to maintain the arrangement of unbound materials.
- Please report any disarrangement of materials to a staff person on duty.
- Never remove items from encapsulation.
- For certain collections, researchers may be required to wear gloves, which will be provided.
- Photography and scanning of library materials is allowed. Restrictions may apply. Please see archive staff for details.
- There are computers and flatbed scanners available to researchers, suitable for individual flat items. Instruction will be provided by the archive staff. Photocopying and scanning of bound or large items is available at the discretion of the archive staff.
- Photocopies, scanning, and personal photography are for the reader’s personal use only, and may not be published, recopied, or deposited in another library.
- The Reading Room has playback devices for CD, DVD, audio cassette, and VHS video. Other needed equipment should be discussed with the staff in advance of your visit.
- It is the researcher’s responsibility to satisfy copyright requirements for any re-use of material.
- Permission to publish materials must be requested in writing to the Rose Archives, and correct citation given.
- Do not re-shelve items. The archive staff will replace materials after your visit.
- The archive staff retain the right to search any personal items when leaving the Reading Room.
