Vice President News from Ian Harper

It is hard to believe, but the start of the fall semester is just around the corner!

The University hosted several student orientation sessions during July – thank you to everyone that helped to make them a tremendous success! Lots of positive feedback on the food served, the condition of the grounds, the overall campus, and the information desks.

RAs started arriving on campus this week, student athletes will start arriving next week, and the new campus bookstore is ready to go. Before we know it, the freshmen class will be moving in and there will be new energy on campus.

Talking about energy, I had the honor of attending the first morning of the BASC Annual Return-to-Work Meeting. It was great to see everyone reconnecting and catching up after the summer break. At the meeting, BASC announced their new theme for the upcoming academic year: “Culture, Community, Future.”

I’m currently writing the Division’s Annual Report that will be reviewed and discussed with Cabinet. This is a tremendous opportunity to reflect on the last 12 months and all of the wonderful things that we, as a division, have achieved. For example, the introduction and rollout of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), the implementation of NEOED (our new applicant tracking system), the Campus Electrical Upgrade Initiative, the continued strong financial stewardship of the University, and our continued collaboration and support across the University – these are just a few of our many achievements. Thank you to everyone who contributed to these as well as all of our other accomplishments; you should feel very proud.

On a final note, I wish both Christopher Swift (of Mail Services) and Mark Stacy (of Procurement and Payment Services) a speedy and successful recovery.

Take care and thank you for all that you do!

Departmental News

Brockport Auxiliary Services Corporation (BASC)

July was a busy month for BASC as we welcomed our new first-year students to campus and answered their questions during the summer Orientation sessions. In addition to Orientation, the Dining Team has also been hard at work serving the dining needs of our EOP students and campers, including Empire Girls State and MLK. Last week, we also received the great news that Empire Girls State has committed to return to SUNY Brockport for the next three years!

As a staff reminder, our summer Staff Saver Wednesday is still in effect and will also return this fall. BASC appreciates the participation and the opportunity it provides for convenient meals and building community through food.

The new Campus Store is open and has been serving Orientation students all summer, as well as accepting textbook orders at the Online Bookstore. If you haven’t already, please stop by the store in the Seymour Union to check out the new look! Additional merchandise is arriving regularly!

Brockport Information Technology Services (BITS)

BITS staff are “on the move!” This summer, the following staff moves are taking place (or have already): Kurt Pijanowski moved from the Fannie Barrier Williams building to Edwards Hall; Reddy Anugu, Pat Maxwell, Kevin Montano, and Carl O’Connor moved from the Drake Memorial Library building to the Allen Administration building; and Shawn Maher and Tim Reagan moved from the Drake Memorial Library building to the Tuttle building.

Finance & Management’s Office of Student Accounts & Accounting (F&M/OSAA)

The SUNY fiscal year-end was June 30, 2025, and Student Accounts & Accounting once again partnered with BITS to successfully execute the complex and often cumbersome processing needed to ensure compliance with related SUNY mandates. We are now deep in data analysis, financial reconciliations, and report creation, but wanted to offer our gratitude to the people who made it happen – Dan Murdoch, Elizabeth Gorall, Jonathan Stephenson, Amy Aina, and Patrick Stellman. Special thanks to Colleen Crouse for the extensive training provided prior to her leave; we would not have been successful without her!

In addition, the offices of Student Accounts & Accounting and Financial Aid have joined forces to provide one-on-one counseling sessions to families of incoming first-year students. Families attending First-Year Student Orientation are invited to meet with us to ensure any questions they have surrounding billing and financial aid are answered, and their fiscal fears are alleviated. We’ve received extremely positive feedback, in large part due to including a staff member from each office at each of the 3 separate service stations – making it a one-stop shop! Special thanks to Elizabeth Gorall for her idea of purchasing a fabulous selection of SUNY Brockport stickers from our Printing Services friends as “freebies” to those who visited our station. Families have raved about the quality of the stickers … as always, Printing Services exceeded expectations (thanks, Dan Dippel, Kelly Lutz, and Robert Fisher!).

Human Resources (HR)

On July 2, 2025, Becky Gagne celebrated 25 years of service with SUNY Brockport! She started as a Keyboard Specialist and has worked her way up to Associate Director of Human Resources; Becky is a valued member of the HR team!

And on July 26, 2025, Michelle Demonte participated in the Krossin’ Keuka fundraising event, swimming .67 miles across Keuka Lake to raise funds for the Keuka Comfort Care Home (KCCH), which provides compassionate, end-of-life care to terminally ill residents and their families, completely free of charge. The swim was a HUGE success, with 196 swimmers and over $119K raised for KCCH! Michelle’s team raised over $2K and accomplished their swim in just 38 minutes.

BizLibrary suggested course of the month

Emotional Intelligence Crash Course (rated 4.5 / 5 stars) – This 29-minute video course (in 4 segments) is designed to take the viewer through the basic process of developing emotional intelligence. It outlines how to understand and apply emotional intelligence throughout the viewer’s life. First, the learner must know about the theory of multiple intelligences and how emotional intelligence factors in, so that they can understand what to look for and improve in themselves. Once basic understanding is achieved, the viewer learns how to apply emotional intelligence broadly through social awareness and directly through personal and professional relationships. Finally, the course explores the DISC model and its relationship to emotional intelligence.
