Vice President News from Ian Harper
I hope you all had an opportunity to enjoy the summer, they seem to go by quicker and quicker!!
The new academic year has arrived and it is fantastic to see the new and returning students; it certainly brings a different level of energy to campus. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare the campus buildings and grounds for the return of students, and to those who helped students with Move-in and navigating their first week of the semester.
Congratulations to everyone that was involved in the Campus Electrical Upgrade Initiative Project which successfully completed during the last week of August. Despite multiple electrical shutdowns throughout the summer, there were minimal disruptions to campus life — in fact, the project was completed ahead of schedule!
We received the results from the Great Colleges To Work For survey and, overall, the results were encouraging. The survey provided good feedback and identified some areas for improvement, which I will share more about during our semi-annual A&F Division meetings on September 8 and 9.
Speaking of which, I hope you will join me and your colleagues at one of the Division meetings, where we can spend time together, have some food and fun, reflect on what we have achieved, learn about what’s happening at the University, and get aligned on our goals for upcoming year. I look forward to seeing you all.
Take care and thank you for all that you do!

Brockport Information Technology Services (BITS)
BITS was busy supporting the campus for the start of the fall semester! Here are some metrics about what we were up to during the week of August 20-27, 2025:
- 604 new service tickets were created, while 540 tickets were completed/closed.
- 277 Service Desk calls and 53 Classroom Technology calls were handled
- The top 5 ticket types were:
- 81 - I need Help / General
- 71 - Student Internet / ResNet (Residence Hall Network)
- 64 - Software
- 42 - Classroom Technology
- 32 - Brightspace Learning Management System
BITS shares some charts depicting SUNY Brockport’s increased Internet Traffic at the start of the fall semester:
The graph shows the increase in internet traffic on campus from Sunday August 17 to Thursday August 28. Our internet traffic increased as students arrived on campus and classes began.
And this next graph shows internet traffic from Wednesday August 27 (6am) to Thursday August 28 (6am), so a full 24-hour view of the campus internet traffic. The darker shade is outbound traffic and the lighter shade is inbound traffic. We seem to be peaking between 6.5-7.0 Gigabits per second during the evening hours. The current internet service maximum is 10 Gigabits per second.
Facilities Maintenance & Operations (FMO)
Please note that October 2nd is National Custodian Day! This day honors the dedicated custodians who maintain cleanliness and safety in schools, hospitals, and offices. It is also known by various other names, including National Custodian Appreciation Day and National Janitor Day, emphasizing the vital role custodians play in our communities.
We thank all of our custodial employees in Facilities Maintenance & Operations (FMO) for their around-the-clock hard work and dedication to maintain a clean and healthy environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Please take a moment to thank your building’s dedicated custodian(s), and any other custodial workers you may encounter across campus, and let them know how much you appreciate all they do!
Facilities Planning & Construction (FPC)
Although this project has since been completed, here is a photo of the repairs made to the tennis courts a few weeks ago, before final painting and the installation of new nets.
Finance & Management’s Office of Student Accounts & Accounting (F&M/OSAA)
During the 2024-25 Fiscal Year, the OSAA accomplished the following fun things, among their other duties:
- Processed $39,575,235 in student cash* payments (*cash = checks, ACH, currency and credit cards). This total does not include the large amount of departmental and other miscellaneous cash transactions processed.
- Generated $21,733,965 in student refunds. Refunding has been particularly challenging for the Fall 2025 Term, due to an issue with the new SICAS Program designed to programmatically generate refunds, which appears to “over-refund” students. Rather than risk inaccurate refunds, OSAA staff manually analyzed over 3,000 accounts between August 21-27 to determine if a refund is appropriate, and then manually processed the transaction(s) to ensure students received needed funds as quickly as possible. This process will continue throughout the semester until a SICAS Programming fix is identified and implemented.
- Generated 137,615 electronic student billing statements.
Employees in the Spotlight!
New Employees:
- Facilities Maintenance and Operations (FMO) welcomes three new Cleaners: Avery Buchholz, Meagan Gaylord, and Quavonda Wooden.
- FMO also welcomes their new Office Assistant: Robin Schepler.
Please join us in welcoming all of our new folks to SUNY Brockport!
Retirement:
- BITS congratulates Terry Eason on his retirement! Terry’s last day is Friday, September 5. He has worked in Telecommunications since January 2007 and has been part of the BITS Team since December 2015. Terry will be remembered for his customer service, extensive knowledge of telecommunications, being a problem solver, and getting each job done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Mystery Photo:
This photo was taken somewhere on campus recently. The first A&F Division Employee to correctly guess the name of the person pictured and their exact location (building & floor) wins a $15 gift card! All guesses must be emailed to lausmith@brockport.edu with “Mystery Photo Guess” in the subject line.
Last month’s image was of Mr. Bill in a window on the First floor of the Drake Memorial Library – and the winning guesser was Jake Pruss of FMO, which won him a $15 Amazon Gift Card!
BizLibrary suggested course of the month:
Respect at Work - Appreciation (rated 4.5 / 5 stars) – This “Appreciation” video lesson is meant to help learners perpetuate a respectful environment through recognition and praise. This video lesson is part of the “Respect at Work” series, which guides employees to cultivate a respectful and inviting workplace.
