Issue 54: January 12, 2026

Vice President News from Ian Harper

Happy New Year everyone, welcome back after the holiday season, I hope you had a safe and enjoyable time with family and friends.

As with the beginning of any New Year there is much to look forward to, both expected and unexpected, no doubt we will face change and challenges, some within our control, others perhaps not. However, the one thing you have all demonstrated is the ability to get things done, to problem solve and figure it out. If the answer isn’t obvious then you have great team members and resources around, you that can help you work it out.

Speaking of resources, this is a great time to remind you of the amazing resources that are available as part of our Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

At my last staff meeting before the holidays, we discussed an article titled “Doing Less with Purpose”: The Power of Prioritizing Value Over Volume. This article reflected on an environment where we are asked to do more with less resources. This plays directly with work life balance. The premise is that we need to rethink how work gets done, what work gets done and whether some work even needs to get done. I mention this because it’s a theme that I believe is important and is one that we have started to talk about and one we should continue to explore and will be a focus for 2026, more to come on this topic.

One of the first things I did after the holidays was to sign thank you letters for folks that reached a milestone work anniversary. It was very humbling to see the number of years with undoubted commitment and dedication to the University, put in by so many, on behalf of the University, thank you.

I look forward to seeing you around campus and here is to a successful 2026.

Take care everyone, thank you for everything you do.

BizLibrary Suggested Course of the Month

4 Essential Skills – Planning, Organizing, Prioritizing and Completing (14 minutes long; rated 4.5 of 5 stars) – Planning is setting goals and defining the strategies that will be used to achieve those goals. Being organized enables us to control our workload, create a better work-life balance and feel more energized. Prioritizing establishes an effective workflow, with a focus on tasks that are considered the most urgent and most difficult. Planning, organizing and prioritizing are all geared to the final stage of completing the tasks – getting them done. Completion requires perseverance but, with self-awareness and basic strategies, everyone can learn to finish what they start. In this video psychologists Peter Quarry and Eve Ash explain these essential skills, and you will learn ways to improve them.
