Troy is a chemistry major with an interest in applying mathematics, computer science, and physics to tackle problems in chemistry. He is drawn to research that integrates these disciplines to develop theoretical frameworks and computational tools, for example, creating software that enhances our understanding of new biofuels in the context of conventional and advanced combustion-ignition engines (the focus of a research group in a graduate program he is currently considering). At Brockport, his research has reflected these interests through his involvement in groups focused on physical and biophysical chemistry simulations, which is also the subject of his Honors thesis work.
Troy aims to pursue a career in academia or a government laboratory, where he can contribute to the development of chemical theory and computational models that support sustainable practices and/or progress in medicinal chemistry. Dr. Hoffmann has been an incredible mentor throughout his journey of applying to PhD and fellowship programs, like the DOE. His guidance, support, and the opportunities he has offered have been invaluable.
