Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are compact regions at the centers of galaxies powered by the accretion of gas into supermassive black holes. While the most powerful AGNs can outshine their entire host galaxies, most emit far less radiation and are classified as LLAGNs. Studying LLAGNs is key to understanding the full range of AGN and supermassive black hole systems.
Although X-ray emission has been detected in LLAGNs, its origin remains debated. It may arise from hot gas accreting into supermassive black holes, jets produced during accretion, or a combination. NuSTAR will enable the research team to investigate the nature of X-ray and gamma-ray emission, which is poorly understood. Funding will support undergraduate student research projects in the Physics Department’s astrophysics group at SUNY Brockport.
Working with Dr. Wong, SUNY Brockport students will be among the first to explore some of the most energetic phenomena in the universe, gaining experience in frontier science while developing skills in statistical data analysis and computer programming. The funding will also provide support for them to present their findings at regional and national conferences.
The award will be administered by The Research Foundation for SUNY under the Scholarship, Research & Sponsored Programs Office.
