Olivia Metz’s passion for art and photography was ignited in her childhood by her grandparents. Her grandfather gave her a digital camera at a young age, and she spent a lot of time drawing and creating art with her grandmother.
“My main interest was photography, and I loved that it was a major at Brockport and was also still close enough to home where I could grow and establish my own life, but could visit my family often,” she said. “I have absolutely loved Brockport and the people and experiences I have had, and it’s a place I can call home now.”
As an undergraduate student at Brockport, Olivia was presented with the opportunity to take photos for athletics, and that influenced what she wanted to do in her career and what she does now.
“I was taking pictures for the athletic department and had a great relationship with the grad assistant before me, Kaite Wilson, who recommended me for the job. I never saw myself going to grad school, let alone continuing my journey in athletics.”
After earning her bachelor’s degree in art, with a concentration in photography, as well as two minors in graphic design and journalism and broadcasting at Brockport, Olivia chose to pursue a master’s degree in liberal studies.
As a graduate student, she was hired as a graduate assistant to the Sports Information Director (SID) in athletics. Olivia enhanced her learning and challenged herself creatively in the position, accomplishing a host of projects and assignments.
“… I have helped with stats, managed social media, taken photos and videos, made graphics, written stories, and have helped to oversee our photographers and practicum students, which has taught me leadership and has brought out so much confidence in myself,” she said.
The flexibility of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies has opened Olivia to a variety of courses. The multidisciplinary program allows students to create a unique plan of study, focused on contemporary issues from the humanities, social and natural sciences, and the fine arts. This approach helps students achieve their personal and professional goals.
“I have liked instructional design courses and my project management course a lot because they both have helped me learn how to put together projects and help others learn in the best way for themselves. They have also helped me see things from an administrative point of view, which is a position I may be interested in in the future,” she said.
When asked what her best advice would be for future students, she responded, “Whether it be in athletics or liberal studies, always chase after what you love and work for it. I have found out after finishing one year in grad school that finding balance and finding a routine is so important.”
Olivia emphasized that hard work pays off if it’s something you’re truly passionate about.
