Jalen Carthens was an undergraduate student here at SUNY Brockport who earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management with a minor in coaching. He is now moving on to earn his master’s degree in athletic administration. When asked about a significant opportunity Brockport has given him, he mentioned his internship with the Success Academy Charter Schools Network, a K-12 public school system in New York City.
The internship was a transformative experience that provided Jalen with a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to manage a large-scale athletic program. Throughout the summer, he was involved in administrative tasks, event management, professional training, and hands-on event management. He started with foundational tasks, such as creating spreadsheets and binders for various sports. Then he moved on to more direct responsibilities, such as assisting with a Jr. Knicks Clinic and working at the Travel Sports Camp, where he managed attendance, operated the shot clock, and kept score.
“I also did tons of equipment management for the network, as Success Academy Charter Schools runs 57 schools across NYC, serving over 22,000 students on 300 athletic teams,” he said. The academy prepares students for a life heavily supported by sports, and Jalen is extremely grateful to have contributed to his athletes’ positive athletic experiences. “The internship was also a period of significant professional development and contribution. I attended several meetings with the athletics team, coaches, and the media team, where I shared my observations and contributed to strategic discussions.”
Jalen adds that his experience culminated in his attendance at a network-wide training session at the Javits Center in New York City, where he learned more about being a successful coach or teacher for others in his industry.
Overall, the internship helped Jalen grow professionally and personally. His passion for sports and supporting young athletes’ lives was solidified. Jalen adds that the experience confirmed his career path — combining his love for sports and professional development.
When asked what piece of advice he would give to future students in the program, he emphasized building relationships with those around you while you are in academia.
“Maximize connections with supervisors, colleagues, and other professionals you meet. These relationships are invaluable, enriching your learning and creating a vital network for future job searches or new opportunities after graduation,” Jalen said.
