The Department of Dance presents DANCE/Hartwell Spring 2026, an evening of original choreography created and performed by undergraduate and graduate student artists. Performances will take place April 9–11 in the Hartwell Dance Theater.
DANCE/Hartwell is the department’s mainstage concert highlighting innovative work developed for the proscenium stage. This year’s program features six original works choreographed by undergraduate students, reflecting creative research conducted as part of their studies. The pieces engage with questions related to the human experience through movement-based inquiry.
“The works in this concert explore themes that reflect the complexities of being human,” said Artistic Director Carlos R. A. Jones, Chair of the Department of Dance. “Audiences can expect a contemplative evening with shades of joy and frustration as these emerging artists examine connections to technology, identity, and one another.”
Rooted in Modern and Contemporary dance traditions, the program showcases a range of artistic perspectives and movement styles. Each choreographer brings an individual perspective, contributing to a body of work that highlights the role of dance as a form of investigation, reflection, and expression.
Audience members are invited to reflect on how relationships with technology, self-awareness, and community shape everyday life. The concert highlights the depth of inquiry and expressive potential that define contemporary dance practice today.
