Civic Engagement brought in a member of United Way on Thursday, March 26 to teach students about the acronym ALICE (asset-limited, income constrained, employed), and its impacts on our community. In sum, ALICE refers to individuals and families who earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but less than what’s needed to survive in the modern economy. Students not only learned current statistics, but also took part in an interactive experience in which they simulated an individual or family experiencing ALICE and made decisions on what they would spend their income on. Students commented on how eye-opening the experience was, and learned ways they can get involved in improving the community.
Students Learn About Economic Disparities in the Region
Students took part in “The ALICE Experience” on March 26, an event put on by Civic Engagement and United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes.
