Describe your most significant academic accomplishment.
“I served as the Flieger Fellow in the Fall of 2023 and thus was a teaching assistant for Professor James Spiller. Through this, I helped Professor Spiller with administrative tasks and also helped students with course and content questions. In addition, due to my time spent in the office, I was able to meet many other history students as well as professors in the department that I had not yet worked with and therefore made many both professional and personal connections.”
How has the above experience impacted your future plans?
“After I graduate Brockport in Fall 2024, it is my plan to pursue a PhD in History and then become a professor of History. Being the Flieger Fellow not only gave me something to put on my resume, but also demonstrated what it would be like to have courses of my own and what work goes into prepping for class and what it means to give helpful feedback to students. Therefore whilst my time as the Flieger was challenging in terms of having to stay on top of both Professor Spiller’s class as well as my own work, it was rewarding and made me excited to have classes of my own.”
What would you tell a future student interested in your field of study?
“Being a history major is a lot more than just learning about things that have happened in the past. It is a lot of interpreting evidence and trying to make sense of it, and thus you are creating or contributing to one of many historical narratives, so, be prepared to think critically about the evidence, as well as your own and others’ interpretations of it.”
Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you chose Brockport.
“I graduated from SUNY Geneseo in May of 2023, where I majored in history and minored in multi-disciplinary creative practice. I currently work as a substitute teacher and do various jobs in technical theater. At the time of graduating from undergrad, I knew I wanted to do something within the field of history, but I was not sure what, and thus I felt like getting my masters whilst exploring the opportunities that Brockport afforded me was a good way to figure out what I wanted to do post masters degree.”
