About the Committee

The Public Art Committee is responsible for facilitating the enrichment of our campus through the display of art in public places, both inside of buildings and on campus grounds. Our goal is to help make Brockport a great place to work and a great place to learn!

Mission & Goals

The Public Art Committee of SUNY Brockport has been charged to provide a comprehensive framework to effectively manage the collection and display of art in public space inside of buildings and on the campus grounds.

SUNY Brockport recognizes that art enhances the quality of life and helps foster an environment that encourages and nurtures creative expression, and it therefore supports the display of artwork on campus for the purpose of advancing the sense of community, engagement, diversity and connection among members of the University community. The University is particularly pleased to have the opportunity to consider works by successful students, prominent alumni, faculty and other artists associated with our region to celebrate their contributions to the world of art. Acquired public art should expand the educational mission of SUNY Brockport by providing interesting and challenging work of high quality, accompanied by an interpretive program to make the works accessible to the non-specialist.

Method of Appointment

The PAC shall ideally be chaired by the Collections Manager and will be composed of representatives from the following constituencies:

  1. Brockport University Senate representative*
  2. Department of Art faculty representative*
  3. Office of Facilities Planning and Construction representative*
  4. Student body representative (undergraduate and graduate) *
  5. Faculty representatives (representing the 3 schools)
  6. Staff representatives (academic and non-academic)
  7. Local community representative
  8. Emeriti representative
  9. Alumni representative

History

Originally charged by the now-defunct Capital Planning Policy Review Panel (PPRP) in 2015 as the Art Placement Committee, the committee’s new name and new charge in 2024 reflects current management best practices, the new role of a designated Collections Manager to oversee the University’s artwork, including works by E.E. Cummings, and the hard work of the committee members from across campus and the community who have enthusiastically spearheaded and facilitated various projects over the years, such as:

  • The BSG-commissioned Squirrel by nationally known wildlife sculptor Mary Taylor of Honeoye Falls, mounted on the exterior of the Student Union
  • Artwork acquisitions for Lathrop Hall as part of the building renovations
  • Artwork acquisitions for the Liberal Arts Building, later renamed the Fannie Barrier William Building, as part of the building construction
  • The artist-designed benches made from the trees cut down on the site of the FBW Building
  • The artist-designed benches made with trees removed for patio construction at the Alumni House
  • The bronze bust of Fannie Barrier Williams by Rochester artist Olivia Kim, to be installed in the main lobby of the FBW Building in 2024

Proposal & Review Policy

The PAC is responsible for reviewing requests for public artwork placement and purchase on the SUNY Brockport campus, in accordance with the Public Art Policy. In addition, working with the Collection Manager, the PAC facilitates the lending of artworks from the collection for display in public spaces in campus buildings.
