Provost Faculty Fellow, Project-Based Learning (2025-2027)
The Office of the Provost welcomes applications for a new Experiential Learning (EL) Fellowship program. For the inaugural year (starting in January 2026 through May 2027), this fellowship will focus on project-based learning (PBL), defined as “a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge” (PBL Works). Research has shown that PBL can lead to improved student outcomes (Zhang & Ma, 2023).
Note: Different EL Pathways (i.e., Internships & Fieldwork, Research & Creative Works, Community-Engaged Learning, Leadership & Student Employment, Education Abroad & Global Engagement) will be selected for future rounds of this fellowship.
This fellowship brings up to three faculty (across different disciplines/programs/schools) into a small innovator group to advance project-based pedagogies. The fellows will meet across multiple semesters, with the support of CELT, and particularly the Experiential Learning Program Coordinator, to design, implement, assess, and disseminate project-based learning experiences for students through shared resources and best practices. The fellowship will offer a supportive community to exchange ideas, receive mentorship and develop new strategies for integrating PBL into curricula. The goal is to create a pipeline of PBL champions across disciplines at SUNY Brockport.

- Spring 2026 - Design: Fellows will design, integrate and scaffold project-based learning experiences into one of their existing or new courses. Fellows will be expected to identify effective strategies for student learning and engagement in PBL. Fellows will participate in at least one professional development activity related to PBL, to be decided by the group and subject to approval by CELT.
- Summer 2026 - Prepare: Fellows will receive a summer stipend in the amount of $4,500 to develop materials, prepare the syllabus, and work through any logistics associate with PBL.
- Fall 2026 - Implement: Fellow will implement PBL into one existing or new undergraduate course during the Fall 2026 semester and evaluate the outcome relative to their defined metrics.
- Spring 2027 - Assess and Share: Fellows will work on refining PBL methodologies, incorporating student feedback and evaluating outcomes, to determine the effectiveness of their approach. They will share their findings with the Brockport community through at least one CELT workshop and will also be encouraged to share their findings beyond Brockport at a SUNY, regional or national conference. Fellows will also be expected to mentor the next cohort of EL Fellows with at least one to two meetings. EL Fellow alumni will be encouraged to participate in ongoing conversations and continuous improvement in PBL-embedded teaching and serve as a resource to colleagues’ campus-wide.
